Branebender is an experimental wavetable synthesizer. It doesn’t use any samples apart from wavetable files. It is based entirely on Kontakt’s wavetable engine, which technically can be considered a sampler, but we insist on calling it a synthesizer.
The idea behind this instrument was to create a sort of living sound machine, something with many animated parts moving in an inevident, yet not random manner. We also wanted to move away from the traditional user interface look, towards something more abstract, being more of an interactive sculpture than a utilitarian tool.
It’s a blend of several wild ideas that SZCZ has been tinkering with for a long time. Wavetables are used to shape-shift waveforms as you play. Kinematics is a two dimensional modulator, based on a “particle in a box” game, with several twists and spins. Here it is used to animate different basic engine parameters, with a set of XY-pads to produce morphing and evolving waveforms. The arpeggiator is an attempt to create a building blocks environment, where you can sequence and combine different pattern creating algorithms. Then there’s the modulation hub which can be used to freely modulate any parameter from the effects section.
