🆓 FFOSSO from Orchestral Tools New Division w/ Freemium & Subscription

Much like the direction of other orchestral sample library developers like Spitfire, Labs / Labs+, 8Dio, and Cinesamples’ Musio, Orchestral Tools has released a new division / product line.  This new division is called FFOSSO. FFOSSO offers a free version of a player with 10 sample libraries or a paid subscription version that is €13 / month or €10 / month when paid annually much like how Spitfire Labs and Labs+ and Musio’s free and paid subsription plans work.

To be really candid, the new brand’s website doesn’t explain the new service making it appear that this wasn’t carefully thought out — at least it wasn’t carefully executed, and they just slapped this together this website really quickly and sloppily (the email subscription form isn’t working as of this post). They even call the free version Discover, like Spitfire’s BBC Discover. The libraries are not orchestral libraries but more in the realm of sound design. They describe the libraries as “organic, acoustic, and layered.”

Orchestral Tools has an excellent reputation, and I have to keep our lists of the best free sample libraries up to date, so I need to download and install it. But I suspect that even the free version may offer some intriguing little gems. From their website:

“FFOSSO is freemium
You get full access to all player features and 10 full instruments, along with a wide selection of pre-mapped multi-sampler presets to customize your own sounds. FFOSSO Pro is a content-focused subscription with over 100 instruments and fresh content added weekly.”

I just spent 20 minutes with FFOSSO and I am blown away. This is my hot take.

This player and the libraries contained within are inspiring, gorgeous and incredibly creative. This is a no-brainer for free. Listen to the sounds you hear in the above video. But I VERY EASILY could spend the entire day coming up with songs with this instrument. The sounds are all sound design patches, and they’re very generous with the patches. If I paid for the free version, I would still have recommended this.

I LOVE FFOSSO, even though I have no idea if I’m pronouncing the name correctly.  JUST GET IT!!!! IT’S GORGEOUS AND INSPIRING.
