With the uncertainty of the new administration tarrif proposals I decided to move up my new DAW machine purchase by two years.
I went with This Platinum Studio Max from Jim Roseberry. This new machine is the latest 14th gen CPU and 128gb of RAM, 2tb m.2 OS drive, Thunderbolt 4 with Win 11 Pro installed. The machine has 4 m.2 slots, and 6 sata slots.
I already have a brand new 4tb m.2 drive that has my projects/data and my HighPoint 7505 four slot 4tb m.2 disk controller (as a Raid 0 stripe) for my samples drive (total usable of 14tb filled with 11tb of samples).
I also have two 2tb SATA SSD drives I use for 1) Dropbox local sync and 2) my Acronis OS daily backup. I’ll just install all these drives myself.
I’m hoping this machine will last a good 10 years allowing for eventual gen 5 m.2 upgrades.
Of course, it means that I will do fresh installs of everything so I may be out of the music making mode until max Jan 1, 2025.

Still installing…………….
Small issue. Win 11 Pro will not boot properly if my 4 unit UAD Apollo system is tuned on first (BSOD). Windows must boot fully first then turn on the Apollos. Win 10 did not do this. It’s just a shift after years of doing it another way.
Technically, it’s turn all but the first unit in the chain. Then boot the first Apollo after Windows is up and at the desktop.

Good lord, an M.2 RAID0 for sample libraries? They must load very, very quickly.

Yes, they do.
You must be getting close to where the bottleneck is the speed of light.
I wonder how that will play out. Maybe your plug-ins will load so quickly that they’ll be out of date by the time the UI draws? You’ll have bought ones to replace them? By the time they load they will look different due to having been updated while time passed more slowly where you are?
Oh, wait, do I have that backward? Relativity is so confusing.

Well, it’s up and running with a few caveats. I still have one 4tb m.2 due to arrive and it will be installed along with its mate on my ROG M.2 HYPER CARD for a total of 8tb of “extra space” for future samples install. My 16tb m.3 array (14.5tb usable) already has 11tb on it.
And I have 329 folders on my NAS made up of installers to go through and install at my leisure.
I have not installed Reason 12 or Mixcraft 9 since I really never did much with them anyway.

Nice! I had not used an ASUS mobo for many years but went to them for my build early this year. Seems to be working just fine (AMD proc here). My mobo has 3 M2 slots but I could only use two. I can’t remember exactly why, but I think it involved stealing some capability from the video card PCIe 5 slot (I do gaming on this PC as well). Reinstalling is a slog, but It sure is fun to have a “slim” fast machine for a while.
Do my total drives are
2tb m.2 = OS
4tb m.2 = projects
16tb m.2 array = Sample Libraries
2tb SSD = Dropbox sync
2tb SSD = Acronis Backups
4tb SSD = TBD what it’s for
4tb m.2 = Additional sample libraries
4tb m.2 = spare drive (TBD what its use is)
4tb HDD = old WIN 10 OS (eventually kill it off)
16tb HDD = old Samples drive (maybe revert to USB3.0 external)
