Mark Farner, best known as singer, guitarist and songwriter for Grand Funk Raiload, was born on this day in 1948. In 1973, on his birthday, Farner was able to celebrate with his band’s song ‘We’re An American Band” reaching No.1 hit on the US singles chart. Their first of two no. 1 hits.

I was a fan back in the day even before We’re an American Band ever hot the waves. I listened to them years later and wondered what the attraction for me was back then. Tastes change I guess. They were hated by the critics but had a devoted following. I remember seeing a news article where Grand Trunk Railway was getting bags of Funks fan mail and had to forward it on.
This would be a clever signature if I could think of one.
Billy’s fifth studio album The Stranger was released on this day in 1977
Singles include “Movin’ Out,” “Just The Way You Are” and “Only The Good Die Young,” the controversy around the latter song resulted in Joel’s music getting banned from radio stations across the US.
