Okay, this would have gone on “The Wall,” but considering that it is currently closed for repairs, I still wanted to share it. Yes, as a little kid, I did love Black Sabbath, so they still have a special place for me. RIP, Ozzy.

I knew it was coming and I’m still shocked.
I have no idea who I’d be today if I hadn’t heard Black Sabbath when I was 16.
        Thanks for everything Ozzy.

          Thanks for everything Ozzy.

They were very popular among the guys when I was going to school, and I loved them too. Funny, one of my old friends — an Army chaplain who won the Presidential Medal of Valor, still calls Sabbath his favorite band of all time (although he probably doesn’t share that with the troops!). I just saw an interview with Ozzy the other day, explaining the origins of the whole dark imagery around Black Sabbath. He said that they practiced across the street from a movie theater and he and the other band members began discussing how the popular horror movies were. Ozzy said that everything in music was “peace and love” at the time, so the idea was to play off of the horror films and be the bad guys, the villains.  Although when you consider lyrics to songs like “War Pigs” they clearly were letting their real contempt for war and death show.

Sabbath (and Tony Iommi in particular) is without a doubt my all-time favorite and most influential band.  There’s so much more to the band than what a lot of people give them credit for.  I honestly believe that every heavy rock band and (obviously) every metal band has either been directly or indirectly influenced by Sabbath.  I’d put them as one of the most influential band of all time.  And Ozzy’s melodies played a big part in that.

It’s funny, I’ve always loved Ozzy, but he’s the last guy I listen to in Sabbath or his solo band.  But he was unique and was one of the 4 guys who created an entire genre that still inspires me to this day so he will always have my respect.

I’m just happy he stuck around long enough for the last concert 3 weeks ago before he had to go.  I spent the entire day watching the live feed smiling.

I remember when Nirvana first came out — because I was putting myself through college selling commercial printing and playing drums in the midwest. I was working with Touch and Go Records and used to handle printing of posters. Touch and Go’s president, Corey Rusk, a great guy, was my contact. Corey infamously turned down Nirvana for a record deal, but did sign them for a single. I handled the poster on it. So I paid attention to the band early.

I remember telling one of my friends, a guitarist, when Nirvana’s Nevermind came out that the band’s sound owed a lot to Black Sabbath. He told me he didn’t hear it. Years later, Cobain stated that Nirvana’s sound was inspired mainly by two bands, Black Sabbath and The Knack. I felt vindicated!

Post-Sabbath. It seems like every guy I knew back in my youth that played rock guitar was obsessed with Randy Rhodes, and, of course, devastated when he died.

Sorry to hear of Ozzie’s passing.
Black Sabbath was major part of the soundtrack to my sophomore and senior years of high school.
I saw them at the 1st California Jam.

At least the All Star Tribute didn’t suck and he was around to experience it.
I forget (perhaps intentionally) a tribute I saw on YouTube recently with way too many guitarists on stage, a number of them giving up and playing air guitar because they could hear themselves.

I think Ozzy had a pretty good run. He made just about every mistake possible and still came out on top. As far as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute, I thought that Wolfgang Van Halen did a great job on “Crazy Train.”
