This spectral effect plugin uses a constant Q transform instead of a Fourier transform. This mean’s its mapped to the psychoacoustic frequency range. The constant Q transform also calculates each bin as soon as it can, making it a “real-time” effect. Because the constant Q transform has no inverse, my “inverse” implementation is an effect in itself. Each frequency takes a little but longer than the last to calculate, meaning the lower the frequency, the more delayed it is. unfortunately, this is very computationally expensive so it needs to run on the GPU and as I only have a mac, I can only program for the M series GPU’s.

 

This algorithm allows the spectral effects to stay in tune and preserves low end resolution. The available effects are frequency thresholding, comb filtering, bin shifting, delay / feedback and formant control. Because all of the frequencies are generated at randomised phases, delaying and feeding back doesn’t produce phase issues like classic reverbs can. The delay length is also unit-less because each frequency gets delayed a different amount. This all combined creates a very metallic sounding vocoder / reverb / delay / pitch-shifter / filter.
