A LOT of influencers approach developers as wannabe sample library developers but lack the skills of a serious developer. But Cameron has real talent when it comes to sound design. I have tried to facilitate a relationship between him and a developer. I really like his work, and he’s a cool guy. But he charges a ton to get a product “reviewed.” Even a decade ago it cost 5 figures to get him to “review” a developer’s libraries.

I know everyone is well aware of my take on influencers. The bias and game of influencer marketing aside, I really love Cameron’s style. He’s really well suited for the medium.

In my case, I don’t take into account the profile of the person, status or if is famous or not. I am sure that a lot of people in this forum have had something of that sometime in their lifes.

When I see that someone did something, my first reaction from mine is “well done”. The second one is analyze that, and it likes me or I find useful, say “thank you”, and if not… I say “the next time will be”.

After that, in the road, we can find different type of people doing similar things… some of them charging fees, other giving us their work and time free… but when someone gives something free, independing of it worth or not, or about his/her past… I say “thank you” always.

Well, I was just making the point that Cameron has been trying to establish himself as a sample developer for a while and has had talks with some of sample developers that go years back. I was trying to get across that developers often don’t take influencers in this space seriously when they approach them about doing their own libraries, because often, they’re not that good (that is just me summarizing what I’ve been told, not my first hand take).

On another level — and this is business nerd talk —  I think we should be clear in delineating marketing from altruism.

Cameron giving away these libraries is 100% in the category of marketing, not altruism. He’s trying to build awareness for his brand to sell paid libraries and patches for synths. I think that’s a smart strategy. It’s not done merely to be generous — it’s done to build the business. When developers create a free library they’re doing it to build awareness for the brand, trial with users, and establish permission marketing relationships in the hope of people buying paid product in the future. I always recommend that strategy to developers. It’s well-proven.

Consider that if you’re an indie developer, by creating a free library you can get the equivalent of tens of thousands of dollars of free advertising for your brand and, not only that, you can create trial of your brand’s offerings, and establish direct relationships with your prospects so that you can market to them. Cameron has long wanted to establish himself as a developer / sound designer and I think he has proven that he has the talent. This helps him get and keep his brand out there for sample library users / buyers and get to know the quality that he has to offer.  I’ve always tried to persuade sample developers to offer high-quality freebies. It’s smart marketing. It’s also smart marketing for a successful influencer like Cameron.
