As we transition our community footprint to a dedicated subreddit for the launch of LinkedMusicians 2.0, it is important to remember that the core architecture hasn’t changed. Beneath the modern interface, Reddit shares the exact same DNA as the classic forums that we all know and love. It’s just using a different vocabulary.
To help make our new community space as seamless as possible, here is a quick “Rosetta Stone” translating traditional audio forum features into their modern Reddit equivalents.
On a traditional site, you start at a master index and click down into specific categories—like “Music Computers,” “Electronic Music Production,” or “Instruments.”
Reddit skips the giant master index page. Instead, every distinct community is an independent ecosystem called a Subreddit.
When you want to start a conversation on a traditional board, you open a new Topic. Every time someone replies, that topic gets “bumped” directly to the very top of the forum index page. If a thread gets quiet, it slips down to page 2, 3, and beyond.
On Reddit, a topic is called a Post, and a reply is called a Comment. However, Reddit handles sorting based on community value rather than just chronological replies:
On boards like VI-Control, you often use a dropdown menu to add a prefix to your title—such as [REVIEW], [QUESTION], or [DEAL]. This tells users exactly what to expect before they click.
Reddit uses the exact same concept, but calls them Post Flairs. Before you submit a new post, the platform will require you to select a flair. We have color-coded categories set up—such as [Deal – Plugin ] or [ All Things Music ]—so you can instantly filter the entire board to see only the specific content you want to read. This is the current list of POST FLAIR for our subreddit (I’m presently working on it, but you can see that these category titles closely align with our forum titles at LinkedMusicians:
Post Flair (aka content categories)
---
All Things Music
DEALS – Plugins
DEALS – Sample Libraries
DEALS – Software/DAWs
DEALS – Hardware
DEALS – Service
Audio Production Discussion
Music Gear Discussion
FREE – Sample Libraries
FREE – Plugins
FREE – DAWS/Software
Announcements
Non-Music Discussion
Traditional forums often give you a title under your username based on your post count (like “Senior Member”) or specific status badges granted manually by the administrator.
Reddit uses User Flairs to handle identity and credentials. These are community-specific tags that appear right next to your username every time you post or comment. For example, to honor the trusted members who consistently find and share incredible sales with the group, our moderators hand out a distinguished, exclusive “Deal Curator” badge. It’s our way of highlighting peer-to-peer value and giving credit where it’s due.
Every forum has those permanent “Sticky” threads pinned at the top of the board for site rules, major announcements, or a casual “Coffee Lounge” thread where members can post random thoughts without cluttering the technical discussion boards.
Reddit allows moderators to pin up to two major posts at the very top of the feed. To keep our main stage pristine for deep industry strategy, marketing, and news, we feature a permanent, rotating Weekly Watercooler thread pinned right at the top. Think of it as our official community sandbox—the perfect place to check in, chat casually, and talk about what you’re working on without generating index clutter.
