joegyork If you like prog and folk then you must know Strawbs and Gryphon 🙂
A lot of demo stuff here- https://www.reverbnation.com/daylight
Certainly do William. Gryphon are still going though I have never manged to see them and I don’t own any of theirs or Strawbs’ albums. My favourite folk / rock band is Home Service when it was fronted by John Tams – checkout their Alright Jack album – it is a masterpiece! I’ll check out your link too – thanks

What Do You Think? #1000044664ELP were one of my introductions to rock / prog. As a teenager I had gotten into classical music after hearing Holst’s The Planets in a music lesson and around the same time Peter & The Wolf which made me realise that music alone could tell a story.
Other than that I was more into pop heavily influenced by my older sister – The Hollies, Marmalade (their ‘Reflections of My Life’ remains a favourite!) etc. I happened across ELP’s Pictures At An Exhibition – I can’t remember if I already knew the original orchestral work but I loved it.
From then on my twin passions were prog and classical before folk came along after I first went into a folk club on a wet Sunday evening and loved the atmosphere, the music and the songs that mostly were about industrial work in the north east of England – particularly mining. My father had been a miner so i could relate strongly even at one step removed.

Am I correct in thinking what you’re saying is that you feel eg with Dolly Parton, a country artist, and the various hip hop artists being inducted is that these genres are clearly not rock — as Parton herself pointed out when she was nominated. Is that right? Basically, stick to rock, not country, hip hop, jazz, EDM, and other genres?
The phrase ”social engineering” has some pretty dark history to it, so when you used that phrase, it might lead to people thinking you’re making a very different point which hopefully you are not

‘I had hopes that it was going to be a real Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame but it seems to be Jann Wenner’s social engineering project sadly!’

What Do You Think? #1000044139By coincidence I was listening to Melissa Etheridge for the first time for years recently and I had forgotten what an astounding artist she is so she would get my vote! New Order / Joy Division would be my second choice. Phil Collins’ solo stuff is far too MOR for me!

They were deadly dull and only played a short medley of their older stuff
Renaissance – I suppose they are the same genre (prog rock) but totally different sound and epic songs – sadly I think only Annie Haslam (she of the beautiful voice) is left now from their classic era when they recorded the Live At Carnegie Hall album which was the first of their I bought
Five Hand Reel – a Scottish folk rock supergroup featuring Dick Gaughan, Bobby Eaglesham, Tom Hickland, Barry Lyons and Dave Tulloch. The voices of Dick and Bobby were marvellous – Dick is still alive but has suffered a stroke and so is not working now. An 8 album tribute set has been released to help support him as many of his solo albums have not been available for many years as they were licensed to Celtic Music (along with many other artist’s recordings) who refuse to re release them. Bobby Eaglesham sadly died in 2004

1February 2, 2026 at 5:09 pm in reply to: After 50 Years, The Cure Wins Their First and Second Grammys #1000042708I have seen recommendations in a few forums to keep a list of your registered software products that involve NI. It’s easy enough, so why not keep a copy.
I only use Windows, so no idea about other platforms.
If you run Native Access and select SUPPORT from the bottom left, then click “Create a Support File”, a ZIP file will be dropped in your public documents folder that contains TXT files showing everything installed on your system by NI and Izotope, including (as far as I can tell) all third party Kontakt libraries. I also can find about EVERY VST I have listed there, probably because I have used Kontrol.
You can also log in to NI web site and your account to see your “My Products” page. It’s just a list of titles, but you can grab the whole list (at least on Edge or Brave) by clicking in the window and tapping CTRL-S, which will make a full html file of the window- so no need to scroll and grab by pages.
Thanks for this info @Brian I have done just that!

Got the G Force Axess Electronica expansion (so so) and the OT Flugelhorn Ensemble (after a glitch that OT sorted out very quickly) so not doing too bad for freebies. Also got to consider if it is worth me spending £5 to top up the £25 voucher form Crow Hill to get their Guitar Hive that sounds quite nice!

2December 26, 2025 at 5:11 am in reply to: The energy and magic of this performance at a cramped dive bar blew me away. #1000041326We have a great organisation here in the UK called the Music Venue Trust. It exists to help grassroots music venues which are having a very challenging time at the moment for various reasons. In some cases the MVT have bought venues so that they are not subject to the whims of commercial landlords. We are fortunate enough to have a superb venue just 10 minutes walk away from home in York – it’s an ex working men’s club with a large music room with a bar and a separate bar area as well. Friendly staff, sensibly priced good beer, wide range of music and continually improving it’s an absolute treasure. We’re going to see protest sing Grace Petrie doing a stand up show and fantastic Canadian folk band Le Vent Du Nord there next month
