Tom Service is a Marmite presenter here in the UK on the classical music station BBC Radio 3 – people either love him or hate him. For the record I love Tom but hate Marmite! He also writes for the Guardian newspaper / website and I thought people might enjoy his latest column about comparisons between classical music and heavy metal. He seems to…Read More

From the devil’s violinist to devil’s horns - why classical and heavy metal are a natural pairing
With ear-splitting excess, flamboyant virtuosity and a talent for transgression, where classical music has led, metal has followed. Let’s hope the Philharmonia’s Metal Orchestrated concert turns it up to 11

I’m not really a metal guy — although, I’m very open to anything and there have been a number of metal songs I like, so I’m definitely not a hater and always keep an open mind, and there are elements of metal I enjoy. I think the writer makes some very good points and I’d be intrigued to hear what the orchestra does.

On a much smaller note –…Read More

I’m not really into metal though I was a fan of AC/DC until Bon Scott died. They were never the same for me after that. I also like Deep Purple and Rush – though the latter are probably more prog than metal.
I was initially confused by you asking whether Marmite were a sponsor of the article until I read what I had written again. It’s a British…Read More

I grew up on all of those bands and a lot more. But I became an AC/DC fan with the “Back in Black” album as a teeen. Deep Purple, I loved them since I was a little kid and saw them as teen. I saw Rush live twice back in the 80s and 90s.

I keep telling myself that I am not buying anymore sounds as I spend so little time playing music at the moment but I couldn’t resist this one for the price of a couple of pints of beer – in the UK it is £12 as VAT is added but still seems a snip at the price. Gorgeous!
