I was recently talking to an indie developer about the market overall and the extreme deep discounting and how it puts pressure for developers to do very significant deep discounts to get attention in this market. Here we are months ahead of Black Friday and we have unbelievable discounts from developers big (NI, UAD, UJAM, IK, UVI…) and small.…Read More

Not surprisingly for those who know my taste in plug-in houses, I like the way MeldaProduction handles it. It’s never a big mystery when the sales are going to be and how much they are going to discount. They have their Eternal Madness Sale, in which every week 4 of their products are chosen (seemingly by some sort of weighted randomization…Read More

You’re the person who turned me on to MeldaProduction. To be really candid, I had remembered long ago when the developer did sock puppet accounts on KVR hyping up his stuff and I wrote him off as a scammer. Now, I can share that story, because he recently acknowledged it himself in a podcast. But he’s an incredible developer. Okay, 20 years from…Read More

If you are not familiar with 404 Media, check them out. Tech journalists extraordinaire. This should be a free read to non-subscribers. I recommend the free newsletter if the sub it out of your budget. They cover ALL tech, but I thought this story might be of interest to LM.
EDIT == Sorry- this story is now paywalled…Read More

My wife was just showing me how this musician who goes by the name Plumes doesn’t just sing to audiences of people, but performs for wild animals. So far, I’ve seen videos of rhinos, a tortoise, and this sealion. The animals seemed soothed by his music.

What was responsible for you deciding to learn a musical instrument? Did your parent/guardian enroll you in music lessons or did you decide on your own?
How old were you? And, if you chose to learn on your own, what inspired you to want to learn?

13 years old. Christmas 1970 I received a $30 Tiesco electric guitar that I asked for. I took lessons for about three months and just kept playing. Started giving lessons myself a few years later. Memorable year because that Christmas morning Jupiter, Venus and Mars were all near each other (in conjunction) in the pre-dawn sky. My Dad’s love of…Read More

Perhaps the greatest rock band of all time weighs in on Ozzy, Autotune, reverb, and other important topics. A must watch from the rock GOATs.

I used to run a Facebook Group called “Kindness” years ago. I suppose I was very motivated to do that when my kids were young and I wanted to impress upon them the imporrtance of kindness and caring for others. I would post inspiring stories and quotes about people doing acts of kindness in the group. While I stopped posting in it, I thought this…Read More

So, I was compiling lists of the best free audio production videos for the NEW Audio Production FORUM, using videos that I’ve saved in playlists over the years. Please join in these lists and add your own recommendations — and in my feed on YouTube was a video that seemed like it knew me. It was titled, “How to Mix Your Sh*tty Vocals.” I cracked…Read More

What have you actually learned from your influences?
We can all list the artists we’ve been influenced by, but I think it’s more interesting to list the things you’ve actually taken from them.
For example, I would say that I’ve learned how to do bends from Jimmy Page.
Melody from David Gilmour.
I don’t play bass that much, but most of what I…Read More

This is such a great question. But it’s one that takes time to respond to. (I did respond earlier, but somehow, it was deleted).
I have so many influences that taught me various things. For songwriters, I’ve learned from everyone that’s moved me. Because I grew up with a musician and music teacher mother, and my mother’s education was classic…Read More

This just appeared in my YouTube feed and I really like it! AI did a damn good job with this, but slipped up with the background vocals.

My daughter — who is in HS and sings in the school choir — and has an appreciation for much of the rock music I love, except for Zeppelin, sadly — had a very negative reaction to me playing this AI song for her yesterday. She responded, “I’d rather hear real human beings cover the song in that style than AI. No thanks.” I still had her…Read More

The guys over at Production Expert made a post about the demise of software subscriptions. I think it’s a little hopeful. But if we keep the discussion focused the DAW-related software industry, it’s pretty clear that most of the Millennials and older buyers LOATHE subscriptions. I’m careful to make a clear distinction between what I’d like to…Read More

The only sub I have ATM is EW Composer Cloud that was $88 a couple months ago (1 year). I already own a few of theirs and it gives me chance to spend a year with everything I don’t have. I think the “fairest” option for DAW licensing (as a user) is the Bitwig / Studio One model. Pay for a year of updates and everything stays working as is…Read More

Anybody else got AYAIC’s M3 product? It’s a pretty impressive tool for the mix stage of a project.
If the author’s science is correct (all based on the concept of universal laws of level planes) it makes a mix rather quick and more accurate compared to this amateur’s mixing skills.
I took a project where I had applied all the EQ, compression…Read More

Your pick for the song with the worst lyrics ever written

One of my son’s college roommates is studying etymology, and for some reason, this song came to mind and I told him, if he wants to amuse his classmates, play it before a class. Michael Jackson wrote this and sang background vocals for his sister. You need to see all of the lyrics for this one, but here’s just some of it:
“But when the centipede…Read More

My vote (tongue in cheek) is Mah Na Mah Na. Really the BEST lyrics because I had the whole song memorized since I heard it for the first time in 1969. It still worms around up there and spills into my consciousness every once in a while. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc760ioVf0A

I have multiple submissions for worst song lyrics. One of the Hall of Shame worthy lyrics is certainly Meatloaf’s Anything for Love:
“Will you cater to every fantasy I got?
Will you hose me down with holy water, if I get too hot?”Not to be outdone is Justin Beiber’s song Yummy:
“Yeah, you got that yummy-yum/that yummy-yum, that…Read More

I am a big Robbie Robertson fan and I finally got around to watching the doc about The Band. Sharing in case anyone interested. The doc is good. A lot of stuff I already knew from before. Some stuff I didn’t. I didn’t know Dylan lived in pink house with them for 6 months and thats when they made basement tapes for instance.
I am also a Band fan,…Read More

Robertson was huge to me in my working musician days. I was a devout Christian– that’s why I turned down Veruca Salt. Roberson, like Bruce Cockburn, seemed very authentic artists who didn’t exploit their faith for marketing purposes, but were legitimately talented artists that were great storytellers.

Man, what a tough day. I have way too much going on today and tomorrow and spent this morning troubleshooting the site. Everything should now be working fine. I believe I located the plugin / script that was causing the problem (which brought the site down).

Some time ago when Klevgrand released “Revolv”, I absolutely didn’t need another reverb but I though it was so cool that I wanted to take advantage of the “introductory price” so I bought it, then, if I remember correct, it was just a couple of weeks after the introductory price offer ended, the company started a huge sale that made the plugin…Read More
