Hi everyone – where do you get your free midi files from – I mean legal ones obviously! I’m particularly interested in folk and classical music which is mostly out of copyright. I’ve used various sites a long time ago but want to ensure I am using a legitimate site to download from

Hi everyone. I was thinking the other day about the music that first really moved me emotionally and I wondered what other people’s first ‘tear jerkers’ were?
Mine were my sister’s single of ‘Reflections of My Life’ by Marmalade when I was around 12 and the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s 6th (Pathetique’) symphony.
I was a miserable child 🙂

I remixed the song I wrote for LinkedMusicians last year to encourage people to post. The lyrics are both meant seriously and slightly tongue-in-cheek.
I thought it would be especially fitting to remix it for this thread, as Evolution Indie Rock is all over the track. The two main guitar riff parts that are both use Indie Rock and the rhythm…Read More

Recent reports find that roughly 44% of new music uploaded to platforms like Deezer is AI-generated. This is sparking a major debate about “Human-First” branding and whether authenticity is becoming a premium commodity. I’ve used AI for mixing and mastering, and even played around with AI vocal tools (but never for lead vocals). Do you use AI in…Read More

I tend to think that there’s a huge line between using generative AI to create music (with apps such as Suno) and using assistive AI. I personally would never choose to use generative AI because I love the creative process of writing songs and recording. I have used AI tools for assistance with lyric writing and also mastering. Lyric writing is…Read More

I wrote my first song at 4 years old and would play it on the piano and sing it to entertain my family, relatives, and family friends. But the event that really caused me to start seriously writing songs was the loss of a close friend at 16. Songwriting and multitrack recording was my outlet to deal with grief. Words or tears didn’t feel adequate…Read More

Tom Service is a Marmite presenter here in the UK on the classical music station BBC Radio 3 – people either love him or hate him. For the record I love Tom but hate Marmite! He also writes for the Guardian newspaper / website and I thought people might enjoy his latest column about comparisons between classical music and heavy metal. He seems to…Read More

I’m not really a metal guy — although, I’m very open to anything and there have been a number of metal songs I like, so I’m definitely not a hater and always keep an open mind, and there are elements of metal I enjoy. I think the writer makes some very good points and I’d be intrigued to hear what the orchestra does.
On a much smaller note –…Read More

I’m not really into metal though I was a fan of AC/DC until Bon Scott died. They were never the same for me after that. I also like Deep Purple and Rush – though the latter are probably more prog than metal.
I was initially confused by you asking whether Marmite were a sponsor of the article until I read what I had written again. It’s a British…Read More-
I grew up on all of those bands and a lot more. But I became an AC/DC fan with the “Back in Black” album as a teeen. Deep Purple, I loved them since I was a little kid and saw them as teen. I saw Rush live twice back in the 80s and 90s.

Just started listening to this concert from the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow back in January. I’ve seen the Ayub Sisters in a live stream from another festival and they are very interesting. I’ve posted a link to the concert I’m listening to but it is BBC so probably not available outside the UK
‘The Ayoub Sisters are a…Read More

I’m watching a baseball game with my wife and the organist plays a little bit of the Donna Summer song, “Hot Stuff.” I remark, “That was a really corny rendition of the song.” My wife replies, “Organ doesn’t sound cool,” to which I reply, “How dare you! [mock outrage] You do know that I took years of organ lessons, right? What about Jon Lord,…Read More

Okay, it’s not music-related, but it is LinkedMusician-related. I fell asleep working on the site on my laptop on a couch. I woke up to my cat barfing out a furball on my head. Not the ideal alarm clock, but it was still highly effective.
Ah, my rock and roll lifestyle. -
What was the first instrument you learned to play? Specifically, what was it, the instrument type (e.g., acoustic guitar, electric guitar, electric bass guitar, acoustic bass guitar, upright piano, grand piano, electric piano, drum kit, etc.). You get extra credit if you can remember the brand and model of the instrument.
For me, it was a…Read More

Tiesco Del Rey solid body electric guitar in beautiful blue finish. $30 brand new from the Gibson’s (not THAT Gibson) discount store in our small town. I took lessons, stuck with it, and my folks got me a Ventura semi-hollow body guitar (think ES-335 like) for probably $150 a year later.
/edit/ For kicks, I asked the AI what $30 was in todays…Read More

Guitar tab sites claim to be legal- I honestly don’t know if that’s true, so I won’t post links, but it is pretty easy to convert them (Tab files) to MIDI. As litigious as the industry is, I would be surprised if they were able to run their sites for so long if they were shady. They have loads of oldies and current stuff. Bearing in mind that…Read More
